Terra Station and Vultisig: LUNC and LUNA on the Same MPC Technology

Terra Station runs on Vultisig's technology. Its MPC infrastructure is provided by Vultisig, and it supports Terra and Terra Classic natively.

So LUNC and LUNA get the same threshold signing in Terra Station and in a Vultisig vault. Neither needs a seed phrase. Moving between them is just as simple: your Terra Station vault opens in Vultisig.

Why a vault instead of a seed phrase

Think of a seed phrase as one key to the safe. Whoever reads it owns everything behind the door.

A Vultisig vault works like a safe that needs two of three keys turned together. The key is split into shares on devices you control, and no complete key ever exists in one place. When you sign, enough devices each contribute their share and the chain receives one ordinary signature. A transfer from your vault looks like any other on-chain. There is no seed phrase, because there is no single secret to write down.

The quick route: import your Terra Station vault

Terra Station vaults are built on Vultisig's MPC, so they move over with their vault shares.

  1. Open Vultisig and choose Import Vault
  2. Select your Terra Station vault backup or vault share
  3. Follow the prompts, and your vault opens in Vultisig

No transfer needed. Your LUNC and LUNA come with the vault.

No vault backup? Move with a transfer

For LUNC or LUNA in a wallet you can't import, such as a Terra Station wallet without a vault backup.

Before you start: unstake

Staked coins can't be transferred. If your LUNC or LUNA is delegated, undelegate it in that wallet first and wait out the chain's unbonding period. Claim any pending rewards while you're there. Coins that aren't staked can move right away.

Step 1: Create a vault

You pick the vault type at creation.

  • Fast Vault. One device plus VultiServer, 2-of-2. VultiServer co-signs, and it can never sign alone. Setup takes under a minute.
  • Secure Vault. Only your own devices, typically 2-of-3, such as a phone, a laptop and a tablet. The usual choice for larger holdings.

Both hold LUNC and LUNA the same way.

Step 2: Add Terra Classic and Terra

Open your vault's chain list and add Terra Classic for LUNC, Terra for LUNA, or both.

Both chains share one terra1 address in your vault. Copy it from either chain.

Step 3: Send a small test, then the rest

From your current wallet, send a small amount to your vault's terra1 address. Wait for it to show up in Vultisig.

Then send the rest. Leave enough behind to pay the transfer fee. On Terra Classic the fee includes the chain's on-chain tax where it applies.

The move is an ordinary on-chain transfer you can follow on any Terra explorer.

Stake from the DeFi tab

Terra staking lives on the DeFi tab.

  1. Open DeFi, then Terra Classic or Terra
  2. Choose Delegate
  3. Pick a validator and enter the amount
  4. Sign with your devices

Undelegate, redelegate and claim rewards sit in the same place. Each one goes through your device threshold like any send.

FAQ

Does Terra Station use Vultisig technology?

Yes. Terra Station's MPC infrastructure is provided by Vultisig. Terra Station and Vultisig both hold Terra and Terra Classic, so your LUNC and LUNA are protected by the same threshold signing in either app.

Can I open my Terra Station vault in Vultisig?

Yes. Choose Import Vault in Vultisig and select your Terra Station vault backup or vault share.

Is my address the same after I move?

If you import your Terra Station vault, it is the same vault. If you create a new vault and transfer, the vault has its own terra1 address.

Do LUNA and LUNC use the same address?

Yes. Terra and Terra Classic share one terra1 address in your vault.

What happens if I lose a device?

Nothing, as long as you can still meet your threshold. A 2-of-3 vault keeps working with two devices, and you can re-share to a replacement device without moving funds.

Is Vultisig open source?

Yes. The Vultisig apps are open source on GitHub. New vaults sign with DKLS23, in an implementation audited by Trail of Bits.
